I Want One

As any self-respecting technophile or Mac geek will know, Apple introduced three new devices yesterday: a widescreen iPod with touchscreen capabilities, a phone, and a "breakthrough internet device." The kicker was that they are all the same device. Experience has generally led me to believe that devices that try to cram a lot of functions together into one inevitably trade quality for quantity and rarely do any of said functions well. Apple's iPhone, however, could be the exception to that rule. Time will tell. In the meantime, if anyone has an extra $500 they'd like to donate to my iPhone fund, just let me know. Now please excuse me while I wipe the drool off my keyboard.

Ye Olde Hoppes,
Yes. Please also win the lottery for me. My church will fire me if i play.

Royal Wif Cheese,
For example, like my cell phone that is also a camera that also a "portable music device."

Cell phone: eh. it's okay. except when it's not.
Camera: 1 mega pixel, crappy quality. gimme a break. this is a toy, not a camera.
Portable music device: I wrongly assumed that meant i can play mp3s through my phone. instead, i can opt to download some junk-sounding .wma files for "nominal fees." Boo.

Like today, The Diddy downloaded Sonic the Hedgehog onto his phone.
Sonic on Sega = Good.
Sonic on Cell Phone = Bad. Why is it bad? Because a cell phone is not also a Sega.

My point is, in gadgetland (and plenty of places elsewhere) the norm seems to be that either you can do one thing really well, like a camera that (gasp!) just takes good pictures. Or you can do several things mediocre and combine them.

At least, that seems to be the norm to me. Clearly a case of malfeasance for malfeasance's sake.
